BIOGRAPHY - Carmine Campione

After his graduation from The Curtis Institute in 1961, where he studied with former Philadelphia Orchestra Principal Clarinet, Anthony Gigliotti, and earned both a Curtis Diploma and a Bachelor of Music Degree, Carmine Campione auditioned for and won the position as Second Clarinet with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO). At the same time, he was also appointed to the faculty of the College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) of the University of Cincinnati. In 1998, after 37 seasons, Mr. Campione chose to retire from the CSO. He still continues to teach at CCM, where he is an Adjunct Professor of Clarinet in his 48th year of teaching.

Mr. Campione spent some of his summers performing with the Marlboro Music Festival, the American Wind Symphony, the Robin Hood Dell Orchestra (Philadelphia Orchestra summer season), Pierre Monteaux's School for Conductors, Bay Chamber Concerts in Camden, Maine, the Cincinnati Summer Opera, and the Tanglewood Music Festival, where he was honored to receive the High Fidelity Magazine Award for the outstanding instrumentalist. Before attending The Curtis Institute, he studied with Joe Allard and Daniel Bonade.

Carmine Campione is the author of the popular book "Campione on Clarinet - A Complete Guide to Clarinet Playing and Instruction". This comprehensive text is essentially a reflection of his playing and teaching over the last 48 years or so. Having participated in several International Clarinet Association conventions as soloist and clinician, Mr. Campione is available for a limited number of clinics and master classes.

ABOUT THE BOOK

"Campione on Clarinet" contains many pages of instructional information, techniques, drills, and a detailed method of clarinet instruction using the Rose 40 Studies for Clarinet as its base. It is the kind of book that can be read again and again, because with each reading additional insights can be gained, especially as the reader progresses from one level of ability to the next. This book is a spiral-bound text for ease of use and will answer in simple terms and in a logical fashion many questions regarding:

- the clarinet embouchure
- breathing and support
- tonguing
- the making of music
- how to practice
- reeds
- clarinet equipment and tuning
- and much, much more!

To quote Donald Montanaro (Associate Principal with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Instructor of Clarinet at The Curtis Institute of Music),

"I found Carmine Campione's book on the clarinet very interesting. It clearly explains the solutions to the many problems encountered in clarinet playing. I feel certain that it will prove useful to students, as well as teachers and professionals. My congratulations on a labor of love well done!"
